Synopsis:

July's lecture features a talk by Andy Sturgess, who over a 20 year period and 10,000 hours, built a full size Lancaster bomber cockpit using original wartime parts and then configured it to work as a flight simulator. This has to be the ultimate flight sim!

Andy offers flight simulator experiences in this remarkable setup from his base near Shaftesbury. With the simulator it is possible to recreate an actual sortie and fly it in real time. This is what Andy did on the 16th-17th  May 2023 but this was no ordinary sortie. It was a detailed simulation of the Dams Raid carried out in real time exactly 80 years after the original mission took place on 16-17th May 1943.

In Andy's words: "The raid is well documented but to fly it accurately, a lot of research had to be undertaken to get all the correct times and waypoints. After much research and a bit of luck we came across the actual navigation log used by David Maltby who’s bomb actually breached the dam."

With a crew of 4 Andy then "flew" the complete route taken by David Maltby, who breached the Mohne dam on that legendary night.

The talk covers this unique achievement, the research, building the aircraft and flying the mission along with information about the evolution of the Lancaster and the major role it played in WW2.

Doors open at 7.00 PM

Lecture starts at 7.30 PM. There will be a short interval for tea / coffee and the raffle.

Event closes approx 9.45 PM.
